Surrounded by his family, "Bob" passed away on June 6 at the age of 85. He is survived by Heather, his wife of 62 years. Predeceased by his parents, Mildred and Joseph Dunk of Campbellford, ON. He leaves behind his devoted daughters, Lisa Gifford (Jeff) and Stephani Dunk (Rick Going) as well as his loving grandchildren, Danielle, Ethan and Aidan Gifford. A visitation will be held on June 28 from 3-5 p.m. at Kelly Funeral Home, Barrhaven. 3000 Woodroffe Ave. If desired, donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Sheila spent many years in Ottawa working at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. During her time in Ottawa, she was an active member of St. Leonard's Church in Manotick, before moving to Calgary and joining Ascension Catholic Parish. Sheila will be greatly missed by family, extended family, and many cherished friends. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 15 Steeple Hill Crescent, Fallowfield, ON, followed by interment at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Died peacefully at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice, Kanata, on June 15, 2024 aged 78. Born and raised in the U.K., Angela emigrated with her devoted husband Keith to Canada in 1967. Predeceased in her youth by adored brother, Paul (d.1954), she leaves Keith, her loving daughters Cathy (Duncan), Elaine (Joey), and Margie (Mike), her beloved grandchildren Ross, Scott, Peter, Rachelle, Mayhew, and Kenneth, her dear sisters Jennifer and Corrina. A gifted storyteller actor, and scholar, Angela was able to open minds to a progressive Christian theology that supported the interfaith community in Ottawa, for which she was honoured with the Ottawa Distinguished Women: Women of Inspiration Award (2022). The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated care team of CPMA and Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice, with an especial thank you to Drs. A. M. Rajani Villegas and Mark Clemons. In his working years, Bill was a mechanic, gas station owner and combustion technician – he could fix or build anything.Bill exhibited a thirst for knowledge and modeled the wonder of knowing. Bill was an avid reader, bird watcher, fisherman, and antiques collector. Bill was well known for his passion for persian rugs and his appetite for new discoveries. Bill doted on his granddaughters and showered them with praise following attendance at their dance and opera recitals, and at their graduation ceremonies. Bill's presence at the cottage will be sorely missed by Gilmour Lake friends and neighbours who will remember him fondly for his care of wildlife.Bill was predeceased by his cherished wife, Gilberte and daughter, Natalie. Dan was a beloved son, brother and most importantly father to his two beautiful daughters, Sophia (fifteen) and Hailey (twelve). His girls owned his heart and were the source of his deepest joy. Son of Sheila and the recently deceased Thomas White, he was the definition of a devoted son. It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Janet Marjorie Nadeau (née Henderson) after a long battle with cancer. Beloved wife of Jean Nadeau for 32 years, cherished mother of Marc (Reanne) and Marjorie, and dear grandmother to Roman. She was sister to Elizabeth (Thomas), Joan, and Ruth, sister-in-law to Michael, Monica (Pierre), Nicole (Denis), Joanne, Huguette, and Pierre (Caren), niece to Janet Hammond (née Henderson), and had many wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Margaret (née Maxwell) and David Rippey Henderson.Janet accomplished so much and impacted so many in such a short lifetime. From the days of her youth, when she was a cheerleader, tennis player, track athlete, and musician, Janet had endless energy and a positive spirit that carried her through her education at Queens University and into her career as a high school teacher. She delighted in teaching her students in science, instilling in them a love for curiosity and the scientific process. Even after her retirement, she continued to receive notes from students, detailing how Janet impacted their education and desire to learn. Other than her family and her work, one of Janet's greatest joys was to travel, and she had the goal of visiting all seven continents on Earth. She missed only Africa, having travelled on polar climate research expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic, as well as dozens of other trips around the world.It is nearly impossible to describe Janet in a few paragraphs. First and foremost, a mom and a wife. Always. She injected joy and delight in her family life at every turn and was so proud of her husband and their children and their paths through life. She had a strong faith and belief in God, was a caring neighbour, an avid gardener and nature-lover, an amazing seamstress, made the best pastry you can imagine, decorated cakes worthy of the finest pâtisseries, authored more than 50 school curricula based on polar climate change, was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Bruins, and had a great sense of humour, although she told terrible jokes. She was our Janet, and she will be missed.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Angus was the fourth child of Marion and Bill Ricker. At that time, Bill was a professor of Zoology at Indiana University. The family moved to Nanaimo in 1950. Angus was valedictorian and won the Watchorn Award as a top highschooler. He also won gold merit awards in leadership, citizenship, and sportsmanship. He was a basketball all-star and was interested in political participation. At UBC he studied history, played basketball, and wrote for the student newspaper. Angus was a career journalist. He reported for several Canadian newspapers including the Medicine Hat News, Windsor Star, and Ottawa Citizen. In 1971, in London, he worked for the BBC and the Financial Times. In 1975, Angus returned to Canada and edited The Commonwealth, the NDP publication, in Regina. Then, he returned to Ottawa where he worked on Parliament Hill for MPs David Orlikow (1980-88) and Stan Hovdebo (1988-93) and later became economic policy advisor for the B.C. NDP government in Ottawa. Angus was an avid cyclist with the Ottawa Bicycle Club and rode in the Gatineau Hills and the Ottawa-Kingston tours. He wrote stories about his favorite tours: PEI, Gaspé, Brittany, Normandy and Scotland. In the Ottawa Citizen (Sept 12, 1993) He wrote about his ride to Barnhill on the Isle of Jura, where George Orwell wrote 1984. Angus was fascinated by the writings of Orwell and read the complete works. Angus was also a jazz aficionado and had a profound memory for tunes, lyrics, and performers. At the Monterey Jazz Festival in California, Angus (22) went backstage to talk to the performers and experts.In retirement, he maintained his enthusiasm for jazz, cycling, politics, basketball, George Orwell, and the Boston Red Sox. He edited the Congress of the Union Retirees of Canada magazine. In his last four years, Angus lived at the Redwoods Retirement Residence where he was well-taken care of. With the help of dedicated RN Carol Hickey of Nurse on Board, he continued to participate in activities and outings accompanied by Carol, and shared monthly lunches with NDP friends and colleagues.He is survived by his brothers Karl, John (Fran) and Eric (Carolyn); sister-in-law Nancy, nephew Jörli (Irina), nieces Andrea and Mäelle (Éric), grandnieces Kaitlyn and Tosca. Up to his last moments, he bantered, watched the news, and listened to jazz. He was optimistic, unassuming, and loved by all. He died peacefully. One colleague remarked he was "a kind, good man and always walked the talk for social and economic justice." Celebration of Life in Ottawa, date pending.

Survived by his sister Edith (the late Albert Cuddihey). He was much loved and will be dearly missed by his many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Patricia Morden passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024, surrounded by family at the age of 69. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Coxon at Timberwalk Retirement Community, surrounded by family, having just celebrated his 93rd birthday.Son of the late Douglas and Daisy (nee Bethell). Beloved husband of 68 years to the late June (nee Cathcart) and cherished father to the late Judy (Ron Sparks). He leaves to mourn his daughters Debbie, Kathy (Mark MacDonald) and Sherri (Bill Haines). Dearly loved Poppa of Brenna (Sebastian) and Chet Koneczny (Camila); Russell (Erin), Andy (Karen) and Emeline Sparks (Steve); Madison (Simo) and Ryan MacDonald (Chloe); Alicia (Tyler) and Jessica Haines (Mitchell); and Great-Poppa of 12.Born and raised in "little" Ottawa, Doug knew almost everybody. He grew up in the local parks and rinks playing softball and hockey. He enjoyed a number of years playing professional hockey in the U.S. but chose to resettle in the Ottawa area with his growing family, much as he loved his hockey career.Doug joined the Ottawa Board of Education in 1960 where he oversaw the development of many new schools and managed operations, maintenance and transportation for the school board. He found a new passion around this time for golf and spent many years enjoying the game with friends and family. Hockey never left his heart and he found it again goaltending for the Ottawa Old Pros, travelling near and far for tournaments with June. On one tournament trip to Florida, Doug and June discovered St Pete Beach and made a decision to spend winters there for many years.More recently, Doug got to know the wonderful and caring people at Timberwalk Retirement Community. There were many that truly loved Doug and he was known as Poppa Coxon on the second floor.Doug was a loving, positive, funny, kind, and gentle man. His happiest moments were spent with his family and many friends. George passed away peacefully at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice after a short-lived illness with family at his side.Beloved husband of Leticia (Letty) McIlhinney (deceased) of 62 years. In his retirement years he volunteered at the Museum of Nature (wrote the dinosaur song) for 25 years and at the World Wildlife Fund. At an early age, he enjoyed singing with the Grand Opera Company and performing at the Little Theatre. He continued singing many years with the St. Augustine's choir. For his sons, he was a hockey fan and later manager/agent for their rock band and continued to support the band's ambition.George and Letty spent many years of their retirement travelling the world. They had a great life together and dad would always lament 'how did I get to 93 years old'. Heather, the eldest child of Enid Way and Elwood Richardson, was born in 1938 in Montreal, Quebec. She cherished many happy memories of her youth, and in particular, wonderful summers spent surrounded by family and friends in Rawdon, Quebec. She will be remembered as a loving mother, a wonderful friend, and for her deep devotion to her faith. She will also always be remembered for her humour, love of dogs, desserts, and steadfast dedication to her weekly visits to the hair salon. Dear wife of the late Andrew Edward Gordon. He will be greatly missed by his children Andrew (Rebecca), Heather (Ahmad), and Bruce (Jennifer), his grandchildren William, Ewan, and Henry, his extended family and wonderful friends of so many years.Born during a terrific thunderstorm in Eugenia, Ontario, Bill was the much loved son of Roy and Addie and younger brother of Margaret. Survived by Anne, his children and their partners, grandchildren, brother-in-law Craig Munro and sister-in-law Jani Munro, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents and sister, brothers-in-law Walter McBride, Stuart Munro, and Murray Munro and sister-in-law Lynn Munro.Bill's formative years in the country shaped his enduring love of family, his life-long passion for music, especially the piano, and his deep appreciation of education. He attended the University of Toronto where he completed undergraduate (1957) and graduate (1958) degrees in Chemical Engineering. He then accepted a position with Howard Smith Paper Mills which took him to Cornwall, Ontario where he formed many friendships through a shared love of skiing and sailing. The latter led to his meeting and marrying Anne Elizabeth Munro in 1963. Bill and Anne moved to Montreal, where Bill completed his MBA (McGill, 1967). They started a family, raising three children in Pointe Claire and, subsequently, Ottawa to which they moved in 1971 when Bill joined the Federal Public Service.Bill was a member of the congregation of Rideau Park United Church for over fifty years; he was very active, as an elder, as superintendent of the Sunday School for seventeen years and later, with Anne, for twenty-five years, as a leader of the Group for Friends, a club for challenged young adults.Bill continued to be incredibly active throughout his retirement; he loved art and music and spending summers at the cottage with Anne and in the company of family and friends through many gatherings and celebrations.Bill's kindness, his cheerfulness, and laughter enriched the lives of those who knew and loved him. To his grandchildren, he was "Papa", full of fun, always interested and always ready with an imaginative story to share. His memory is a blessing and will be treasured.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute or Rideau Park United Church would be appreciated. A true warrior: he fought his battle with cancer to the very end. A loving son to the late Beatrice and Kendrick MacIntosh, Ron was born in South Harbour, Cape Breton Island, and is a proud east coaster through and through. A loving husband and best friend to Carol MacIntosh (Dolan), they spent 53 beautiful years together in marriage. The best dad in the world to Christine and Joanne and a proud papa to Marina, Taylor, Jordan and Spencer. His brothers Keith (Lori), Chris (Mel), Derek (Karen) and sister Linda (Gib), all love him dearly, as do nieces and nephews and all members of his extended family. He was a wonderful brother-in-law to Lyle (late Dorothy), the late Bryce and Lorne, Bonnie (late Ken) and Sheila (late Bob). His friends are too many to mention (we would need multiple pages to list!), which is a true testament to how he lived his life. Through sports, cards, hunt camp and work he had lifelong companions who meant the world to him and he to them. Ron retired from the Royal Canadian Mint after 35 years of service, just one example of his deep loyalty in life. A model of true selfless character, he is best known for his unwavering commitment to helping his friends, family and neighbours. Not a day went by that he wasn't here or there, doing something for someone, without ever expecting anything in return. He is the true expression of all that is important in life, loving deeply, living fully, and giving selflessly. Whether at home in Ottawa or through his frequent visits to his birthplace in South Harbour Cape Breton, he made lasting impacts on everyone who met him. It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of John Dornan on June 7, 2024, the Feast Day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. John is survived by his adoring wife and soul mate, Judith who he cherished for 60 years. He was the devoted father of Lissa Dornan (Giulio) and proud grandfather of Justyna (Anthony). He was the cherished brother of Richard (Jean), and was very close to his special cousin, Bruce Dickie (Jackie). He will be greatly missed by his sister-in-law, Denise Désabrais (Robert) and his brother-in-law, Léo Paul Léonard (Huguette). He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews, in particular his special godson Yves Léonard.John was an extraordinary man who was greatly loved by his very large circle of friends whom he considered his extended family. He was a very talented pianist, organist, chorister and ballroom dancer. John and Judith shared these passions together for many years.John will be remembered for his generosity, kindness and love. He always thought of others first and put their needs before his own. Our hearts are forever broken, with the sudden passing of Yvon Chartrand on Sunday June 9, 2024, at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, at the age of 70. Beloved son of the late Omer and Noella (nee Belisle) Chartrand. Brother of Roger (Denis), the late Robert and Richard, as well a special uncle to Lindsey and great-uncle to Lexus and Leah. In 1999, Yvon relocated from Rideau Regional Centre to OCAPDD, Beaudre House, where Yvon took his roots with the wonderful staff members (Vicki, Trish, Tanya, Tracy). In 2007, upon closure of Beaudre House, Yvon moved to living permanently for the last 17 years, at Charette House in Bells Corners, where he found his happy place. The staff and team of OCAPDD (Kaitlyn, Jen, Tina, Harsh, Sarah, Arron, Erica, Jessica, Shanna, Meagan, Breann, Tony and Joanne) were the close-knit family that cared for and supported Yvon with his daily activities. Yvon loved his many outings such as hockey and baseball games, drives to Tim Horton and his last fishing trip on a pontoon boat, where he had an amazing wet and memorable day. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, he would attend his day program at the Annex, where he will be remembered for his many works of art and being a social butterfly. Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. and a Celebration of his Life will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean, ON (at Bayshore Drive) on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 1 p.m. followed by a reception.

It is with sorrow that Norma's family announce her passing on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at age 83 after a heartbreaking battle with vascular dementia. She is survived by her children, Tracy Morgan (Richard Boudreau) and Shawn Morgan (Amanda Brazeau). Predeceased by her parents Charles and Irene Wallace, her infant daughter Linda, her brothers Floyd and Reg, and sister Wendy. Survived by her siblings Trevor (Greely), Judy (Ottawa), and Penny Cook (Greely). Remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins, kin, family, professional colleagues and friends from everywhere. Norma earned her designation of Registered Nurse from Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing in 1961 and practiced on both Canada and the US for almost 25 years until deciding a career change into the Insurance/Insurance Medical world was to be her next accomplishment. Her dedication to her employees and to the service of her clients was evident and well received. Norma's passions were her children and spending time at the golf course with friends. Known to all as Norma, she was never Mrs "Anyone" as that was "her mother-in-law". A good round of 18 holes was always better than a day at a desk. Norma's family would like to express their profound gratitude to everyone at the Bradford Valley Care Community Centre. Their care, concern, and unwavering dedication to their residents truly appreciated. After a 17-year courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, Beth passed away peacefully, in the early hours of June 8, with her devoted husband of 54 years, Bob, by her side. Born in Ottawa, the daughter of Howard and Florence Kneen. Beth was predeceased, in 2020, by her older brother, Howard. Lovingly remembered by her son Richard (Michelle) and her daughter Janice (Peter) Adach, Beth will be missed by her grandchildren Megan Adach, Ryan Adach, Cameron Adach, Avery Hutchinson and Kinsley Martin. Surrounded by love to the end, she has left her sister Katherine Baxter, her sisters-in-law Cynthia Kneen and Patricia Martin, and many nieces and nephews. Beth graduated from Carleton University with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree, followed by the University of Toronto where she obtained her Library Science degree. She began her career in the Toronto Reference Library, moving to the Mississauga Central Library where she became Manager of the Business and Government Documents Department for many years. In high school she developed what would become a lifelong love of curling. This would lead to her meeting Bob while a member of the university curling club in her first year, and their devoted union, both on and off the ice, ever since. After their marriage in 1970, she and Bob became members of the High Park Curling Club where she enjoyed playing and socializing for 50 years. She was a devoted and faithful member of Applewood United Church for over 45 years. A celebration of her life will be held at Applewood United Church, 2067 Stanfield Rd. Mississauga ON L4Y 1R4, on Saturday June 22, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will begin at 11:00, with a reception following. Robert Genest passed away peacefully on May 16th at the age of 93 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Larry passed, at home, in his 94th year. Born in Jarratt, Ontario, the youngest son of The Rev. Dr. Robert Ellis and his wife, Gean. Predeceased by his sister Eden, and brother Robert. As the son of a Presbyterian minister, Larry lived in several different places before arriving in Manotick, ON, where he spent his entire adult life. He married Gwen Kemp on June 20, 1953. She predeceased him in 2014. He is survived by two children, Susan (the Rev. Mark McLennan), Woodstock ON, and Brian (Catherine)], Oxford Station ON, and granddaughter Destiny. He served as Budget Control Officer at Algonquin College for many years, and later worked in Human Resources. He served as an elder at Knox Presbyterian Church, Manotick for many years. He also enjoyed his membership at Manotick United Church in recent years. Larry's great passion was history – particularly Eastern Ontario and the area around Manotick. This led to the production of several history books on the area, and a regular column in the Manotick Messenger. As a result, he was considered the unofficial Town Historian in and around Manotick, and received several awards for his work, including: the Distinguished Award for Civic Heritage, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Diamond Jubilee Medal. Larry made friends wherever he worked, or went – friendships that endured over many years. It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Elefteris (Terry) Joseph Henri Vajionis on Friday June 7, 2024, at the age of 95. Born in Quebec City, Terry spent his formative years in Sydney, Nova Scotia. In 1950, Terry married the love of his life, Anne Francis Burke, and together they embarked on a journey that took them to Toronto in the mid-1950s. There, Terry pursued a career as an accountant in the private sector before transitioning to a long career with Revenue Canada in 1967. He, Anne and their son Jim transferred to Ottawa in 1976 where he continued to devote himself to public service until his retirement in 1994. Terry was an avid radio control model airplane and sailboat enthusiast, finding immense joy and satisfaction in his hobbies. His passion led him to become a founding member of the Stetson Flyers Model Airplane Club in the mid-1970s, where he formed lasting friendships. Terry also cherished moments spent meeting friends for coffee at Tim Hortons or Place D'Orléans. Terry was predeceased by his loving wife, Anne (Burke), his parents, Demetri and Elise, his brother, Andrew and his daughter-in-law Lorie (Jim). Terry's legacy is carried on by his loving family: his son, Jim; his grandson, Nicholas; his step-granddaughter, Mackenzie; his niece, Shirley, and many other relatives. On May 30, 2024, at the Prince of Wales Manor, Evelyn Dorothy Astles passed away at the age of 98, 9 days before her 99th birthday. Evelyn, wife of the late Douglas Campbell Astles, is survived by her 4 children, Dianne Astles, Brenda Jensen (John), Douglas Astles, Linda Brown (Robert); 7 grandchildren, Megan Astles (Serge), Brent Maher (Kim), Craig Bowman (Janice), Douglas Astles (Sarah), Dustin Astles (Sydney), Micheal Honey-Brown (Christine), Christopher Brown (Colleen) and 10 great-grandchildren, Aiden and Liam Maher, Cruz and Beckham Astles, Arthur Harrison, Curtis and James Honey-Brown, Asher, Rose and Rhett Astles. She graduated as a registered nurse and, as a military wife, had the opportunity to work in different hospitals in many parts of Canada. She and Douglas retired in Trenton Ontario where she lived until moving to Ottawa in her early 90's. Evelyn has many interests that she shared with her husband including the Korea Veterans Association of which they were active members in the Trenton area branch. She was a warm, friendly lady that loved to smile. She will be affectionally remembered by all who knew her. Leo passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on May 31, 2024.Born in 1946, Leo was known for his unwavering commitment to his community and his exceptional service as a firefighter captain. Throughout his distinguished career, like his spirit animal – the lion, Leo displayed unyielding bravery and remarkable strength. In putting the safety and well-being of others first, he saved numerous lives both by entering raging fires to rescue others, and by frequently donating blood.Beyond his professional achievements, Leo was an avid golfer and an enthusiastic scuba diver, passions that brought him joy and adventure. His wonderful sense of humour and zest for life were evident to all who knew him. Leo's life was a testament to courage, kindness, and the joy of bringing smiles to others. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched through his service and his personal connections.Leo and his wife Mary Callahan enjoyed 33 years of marriage in their "backyard paradise" in Aylmer, Quebec, before Mary's passing in December 2022. They loved travelling to warm destinations, spending time with friends, and sharing meals with their family at Casa Grecque, and in later years, Mandarin. She was surrounded by her family and faithful caregiver, best friend, and older sister, Francesca Papalia.Maria was born in Solano Superiore, Italy, to Jose and Serafina Bueti. However, her time in Italy was short. At the age of twelve, she moved to Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina. She journeyed with her mother and sister to join her father, who had relocated there in search of a better life for his family. They made Comodoro their home, where Maria attended school and later became a Montessori teacher.In 1962, Maria embarked on a new journey-this time, to Ottawa, Canada, to begin a new chapter in her life. The Life and Times of Dr. Stephen Dzioba: Scientist, Tinkerer, and Dad Joke ConnoisseurBorn in Hamilton, ON, in 1951 to the newly immigrated Anne Vertatschitsch of Yugoslavia and Paul Dzioba of Ukraine, young Steve showed an insatiable curiosity from an early age. While his parents worked hard to master English and build a new life for Steve and his three siblings, Bob, Donna and Mark, he was busy conquering the worlds of academics, music, and art.After his Bachelor of Science, Steve had a tough choice to make - dentistry, medicine, or physics. Realising that the medical world didn't capture his imagination, he pursued his PhD in Materials Science at McMaster University. Little did the world know, this was the start of an exemplary career in telecommunications research.Steve brought his energy to every facet of technology development, from materials science research to leading engineering teams, to managing product business and sales. Since 1981, his pioneering research advanced fibre-optic communications for Bell-Northern Research, Nortel Networks, and NeoPhotonics. He had a knack for mentoring and bringing people together to solve problems, no doubt inspired by his lifelong admiration of physicist Richard Feynman's wisdom: "Explore the world. Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough."Since retirement in 2020, his tenacity for perfection continued - he was an accomplished oil painter, woodworker, and deck builder. While he has left a large collection of art work behind, his family will always remember him more for his endless dad jokes, bedtime stories about The Meeps (magical critters that lived in Steve's belly button), early morning announcements of planet sightings, the knowledge he imparted on a range of subjects from how to cook a turkey, how to fix a boat engine, and why the sky is blue. One memorable occasion involved filling the house with balloon animals, a skill he had perfected to surprise his children. Most important was his unequivocal support for all family members.Despite his many talents, Steve remained humble and thoughtful, offering advice, laughter, and guidance to all who knew him. At the start of the pandemic, he survived a serious heart attack, only to succumb to COVID-19 after a tenacious battle, true to his character, at Brockville General Hospital on June 5, 2024.Steve will forever be missed by his wife Susan DeNure, his children Paul and Erin Dzioba, and his siblings Bob, Mark (Irene), Donna (Andre) and nieces and nephew, Laura, Ryan and Kathryn.Steve's remarkable life will be celebrated at a later date. Irene Louise Howlett (nee Walmesley), passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024 at the age of 91 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Born in Montreal on January 1, 1933 to Robert and Violet Walmesley, she is survived by sister Joyce and brother Bobby. Her passing was preceded by sisters Thelma, Doris and May. Irene was married for over 68 years to Richard Howlett (deceased) and was Mom to Lynn, Richard (Josie) and Robert (Barbara) and Nanny to grandchildren Christopher, Mark, Mary, and Marley and great-grandchildren Ireland, Lincoln, Adelle and Sloan not to mention aunt to many nieces and nephews.Irene was a proud resident of Morrisburg where kind neighbours Minnie and Rick played an important role in her life. In her later years she moved to Ottawa to live at the Bearbrook Retirement Residence where she received support and loving care from the staff and her family.We will remember our mother fondly for her cooking and baking where she always had a selection of delicious cookies, pies or cakes on hand. Being a New Year's baby, Mom especially enjoyed celebrating her birthday and the new year with her siblings dancing and singing to her favourite songs. She will join her late husband at the Iroquois Point Cemetery on July 7 and her life will be celebrated at a private ceremony in Morrisburg for family and friends.

Passed away peacefully at Empress Gardens in Peterborough on June 11, 2024 in his 91st year. Boomer is survived by his wife of 36 years, Eleanor and his children Bill (Tracy), Brian (Cyndy), and Nancy (Gord) and step-daughters Terry (John) and Sue (Howard). He was predeceased by his brother Roy and sister Ruth Corkran and will leave behind his 7 grandchildren, Chelsea, Taylor, Chet, Shannon, Connor, Hogan and Brianne, as well as 6 great-grandchildren.Boomer was born and raised in Ottawa and had a career of 35 years with the National Research Council where he worked as a model maker, producing research materials made from wood and later plastics. After he retired, he and Eleanor enjoyed many winters in Cocoa, Florida and summers at Skyline Trailer Park in Ennismore. As his dementia progressed, he was cared for lovingly by Ellie. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses at PRHC and the staff at Empress Gardens for their care of Boomer in his final years.

Surrounded by family, Pierre passed peacefully on Thursday June 6, 2024, at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife Peggy Margaret (née Knapp), his children Régine (Jean-Sébastien Dorais) and Martine, their mother Diane (née Poirier), and his stepchildren Loni Smits (Andy) and Jordan Dabner. Grace Gloria Hargrave (nee Wyrzykowski) died peacefully at the age of 92, on June 10, 2024, with family holding her closely in their arms. She was predeceased by her husband Dick (2014), son Greg (2011), and daughter Susan (1965). She is survived by her children James (Theresa), Mark (Nadine), Leslie (John) Sharkey, Bruce (Keiko), Anne, and daughter-in-law Jessica Albers. Nana took great joy in her 17 grandchildren and 8, soon to be 9, great-grandchildren. Nana was born May 16, 1932 in Winnipeg, the third of 4 children. With her siblings (all now deceased) Conrad, Raymond, and Sandra, her family built a cottage at her beloved Willard Lake, a precious tradition still continued. Meeting her future husband on a trans-Atlantic crossing ("the only one who didn't flirt with me"), they married in 1957. Through four western provinces and territories, Grace taught and, starting in Tuktoyaktuk, raised a young family. Every move was further south until arriving in Ottawa in 1966. With an oversized lot and hospitable mother, the Hargrave Hub was formed in our neighbourhood sliver of Alta Vista and would last 50 years (we are so grateful Mrs. R). Family enjoyed annual trips of up to 2 months at Willard Lake in NW Ontario. Ever active in her community, Grace was busy with her Parish activities, Pro-life work, teaching, and even school bus driving in her senior years to keep in touch with people. Square dancing, and skiing with Dick became later in life passions. But she was always Mom, loved being Nana, and made time for so many. Sharon McKnight passed peacefully at home in the early hours of June 3, 2024. Sharon was born on July 21, 1936, the eldest daughter of Charles E. V. McKnight and Helen Garver McKnight, in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. She grew up in Ottawa, attending Lisgar Collegiate and Carleton College before coming to Toronto and working in systems engineering. She was one of Bell's earliest computer programmers and became a manager. Retiring early, she devoted much time to her aging mother and to travel. As well, her attention to condominium details as a board member and officer was noteworthy.She was predeceased by her parents, and is survived by her sisters, Helen Jean McKnight Smith and Linda Elizabeth McKnight, nephew Chuck Smith (Wendy), niece Danielle Smith (Johann), and great-nephews Zachary Kiser and Captain Trevor Smith (Kara) and children, and great niece Emily Smith.A private visitation will take place. In her 91st year, Olive passed away peacefully in the early hours of May 9th surrounded by the love of her family. Despite some medical issues, she was healthy until the final weeks of her life.Cherished and loving wife to Brian for 65 years, she also leaves to mourn her daughter Tracy (Ian), her son Martin as well as her beloved grandchildren Sarah (Tyler), Jeremy (Lauren), Heather (Alasdair) and Laura (Greg).The eldest of her family, Olive is survived by her sister Jean (Tony), brothers Pat, Maurice (Sue) and David (Sue) as well as many nieces and nephews of the United Kingdom.Olive's last home was at the Colonel By Residence in Ottawa. The family are forever grateful for the care that she received in the final months of her life and for allowing her to pass in the comfort and familiarity of her own home. Everyone at Colonel By became Olive's family and we will never forget all of the acts of love and kindness that they showed everyday.Olive lived her life with great determination and self reliance. She survived breast cancer not once but twice and also lived with a rare but fatal heart condition. None of that slowed her down and to the very end and she maintained her independence. A quiet observer, her often pithy comments are those of family legend. 1932 - 2024Peacefully around midnight on Monday night, June 13, 2024 with her sons Jamie and Alan and her daughter-in-law Amy by her side. Predeceased by her husband James A.R. Cooke; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.A. Basil; and her beloved sister Pamela. Survived by her three sons, two daughters-in-law and four grandchildren. Born in Calcutta (Kolkata), India, as part of the Armenian community, where she married her husband in 1959. They immigrated to Toronto in 1960 where she was a devoted mother and homemaker. The family moved to Ottawa in 1972. For summer vacations, the family made long road trips to British Columbia, California and the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, as well as several "shorter" trips to Florida. This prepared Jamie and Alan for long distance driving as adults. When her sons were older, Patrica developed a successful career in real estate sales with Royal LePage Ottawa. She canvassed for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and Canadian Lung Association (CLA). She was part of the group that campaigned in the late 1990s against the building of the new American Embassy in The Mile Circle area of Rockcliffe Park to preserve the area as greenspace. A marvelous cook and hostess, her meals are missed to this day, especially by her eldest son Jamie. After retirement, she travelled overseas often with her husband. Although diagnosed with vascular dementia in her last years, Patricia was a woman who knew her own mind, was fiercely independent and would always know when a family member was walking down the hallway to her fifth floor room at the Garry J. Armstrong Home in Ottawa. She lived at the Home for the last eight years of her life. The family's deep thanks to the many people at the Home who looked after her so well, especially during the Pandemic. The family's profound gratitude to Patricia's caregiver and friend Norma Buclay who made the last five and a half years of her life healthy and comfortable, kept her well dressed and looking like a movie star, and most importantly, gave her back her dignity and enabled her to maintain her pride and independence. On June 1, 2024 Pauline Keays Isaacs passed away peacefully at the 'Villa Renaissance' Nursing Home in Dalhousie, New Brunswick at the age of 81 years. She was the daughter of Henry Keays and Gilberte Gaudreu.Pauline leaves to mourn her husband Glenzon Isaacs, her daughter Arelene Borentein as well as her many brothers, a sister, nieces and nephews.Pauline was the sister of Patsy Keays Toulouse (Jacques), Roger Keays, John Keays, Randolph Keays (Pauline), Edith Keays, Shirley Keays, Diane Keays, Michael (Yvette), Linda Keays (Warry), Bobby Keays, Kathy LeBlanc ( Ronald ) and Ruth. She was a sister-in-law to Barbara Roberts (Earl), Gordon Isaacs (Linda), Joseph Isaacs (Joan), Wayne Isaacs (Glenna), Randy Isaacs (Amanda).She also leaves in her passing her Godchildren; Linda Keays, Mario Toulouse and Jennifer Isaacs as well as many nieces, nephews, family members and friends.To all those that knew Pauline, she was a kind caring and gentle person. Her love of family was demonstrated by her actions. Pauline had a very successful career and her accomplishments were many. Her career included working as Executive Assistant for the manager of NB Power for 8 years She then moved to Ottawa where she worked at the Atomic Energy of Canada both in Canada and Mexico. Pauline also worked for the Office of the Prime Minster of Canada under Pierre Elliott Trudeau as Senior Advisor Special Projects and then for the office of the Leader of the Opposition under John Turner as Director of Administration. Pauline ended her career with The Canadian Medical Association as Manager of the Meetings and Travel Department and she worked there for 8 years until retirement in 1996. She then retired to Seaside, New Brunswick with her husband. Pauline loved and enjoyed family and friends. She was the "hostess with the mostest", renowned for her dinners and parties. Peter died peacefully surrounded by loved ones after suffering a serious fall while enjoying the Great Glebe Garage Sale and a beautiful day out in his community.Peter was married for over 50 years to his late dear wife Rose Mae (Kant). He was deeply loved by his children Andrew (Carolyn Seabrook), Colin (Christina), Heather (Nigel Sanders) and Christine (Pierre Lapointe); his grandchildren, Bronwyn, Chloë, Aidan, Alya, Benjamin, Thomas, Johan and Riley; sister Elizabeth Hayes, brother-in-law Donald Routley (Patricia Heywood-Jones) and extended family. He was pre-deceased by his sister Carol Routley, brother-in-law William Hayes, brother-in-law Kenneth Kant and sister-in-law June Gamble.Peter let his life speak through his good spirit, kindness, international development work at CIDA and many years of involvement with and service through the Quakers at home and abroad.Born in Iroquois Falls, Ontario, he later studied Engineering at RMC and Queen's University. Irma van Rutten (née Garbelotto), aged 89, passed away peacefully at home in Ottawa on June 4, 2024. Irma was born on January 16, 1935, in Port Said, Egypt, to Italian parents Corrado Garbelotto and Pietrina Sorich. After leaving Egypt 1957, Irma and her mother arrived in Canada in 1959. Irma worked at the Italian Embassy while pursuing academic studies in the evening. It was during this time that she met her beloved husband, Pierre van Rutten (1920-2007). Irma obtained her master's degree in Comparative Literature in the 1970's. In recognition of her dedicated service to the Italian Republic, Irma was honored with the title of Ufficiale (Officer) at her retirement. Irma was a profoundly joyful, curious, and creative person, always eager to learn about different cultures, languages, and history. She enjoyed creating beautiful and tasteful things with care and grace. Irma is survived by her sisters, Nina and Tilde, her daughters, Beatrice and Emmanuelle, her son-in-law Mohammed, and her grandchildren Sopheya, Yasseen, and Thomas.

Born in Zierikzee, Zealand, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada as a small child with his family. Died in hospital of complications of Parkinson's Disease and Covid. Beloved husband of fifty-one years to Colleen (Dr. C. Wright) who was also his professional partner. Loving father of Jeffrey (Paige) and Andrew. Casey graduated from Ontario Veterinary College in 1972 and, after a short stint in practice in Medicine Hat, Alberta, helped start the first commercial business for bovine embryo transfers, Modern Ova Trends. He was often consulted internationally for his expertise in this technology. After moving to Ottawa in 1975 he opened the Hazeldean Veterinary Clinic where his wife joined him in practice. They built Kanata Animal Hospital in 1985. Casey had a special interest in equine practice which he loved. He retired in 2016 and was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease six weeks later. They enjoyed many winters in Florida and spending time at the cottage on Wolfe Lake, Westport. True to his roots, Casey was also an active farmer who raised Simmental cattle. He loved planting trees on the farm as well. He will be sorely missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral at his request. There will be a private burial in the autumn. We suggest planting a tree in Casey's memory or making a donation to the Parkinson's Society of Ottawa would be most welcome. Born in 1923 at Shawville, Quebec, Douglas Ellis was educated at Montreal Public Schools and at the High School of Montreal. He held degrees in Classics from McGill University, the University of Toronto and Yale and had fellowships at Cornell and Michigan University at both of which he studied Linguistics. He studied Theology at Trinity College, Toronto and Cambridge University. Ordained to the priesthood in 1948, he served at St. Matthias Church in Westmount (Montreal) and for several years at Albany Post on James Bay in the Diocese of Moosonee. In 1953 he was married to Joan Allton of Montreal West.From 1959 to 1963 Dr. Ellis taught Linguistics in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto and from 1963 to 1991 at McGill University. From 1964 to 1968 he served as Vice-Dean for the Humanities Division in the then Faculty of Arts and Science and was also co-founder of the Department of Linguistics which he chaired for over a decade. On his retirement Dr. Ellis was appointed Emeritus Professor at McGill. He later served as Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University, Ottawa.Author of publications in Classics and Linguistics, Dr. Ellis's specific focus for many years was on Cree, the most widely spoken aboriginal language in Canada. Among his better known publications are âtalôhkâna nêsta tipâcimôwina / Cree Legends and Narratives and Spoken Cree, the latter a three-level Cree Language course. Dr. Ellis is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Marilyn (Lynn) Favreau and son-in-law Dr. L.V. Favreau, of Scotch Plains, New Jersey, by his son, John Douglas and wife Fanny of Hollywood Florida and by grandsons Gregory Favreau of Nashville, TN and Alexander Favreau of Philadelphia, PA. Sadly, we announce the passing of Charles Hayles on Thursday, June 6, 2024 surrounded by family at his residences overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands. Charles Alexander Hayles was born in Winnipeg Manitoba on December 12, 1926 to Charles and Martha (nee Whamond) Hayles. In 1954 he married Marion Hazel MacInnes, and they had three sons, Richard (Diane), Steven (predeceased) and David (Patricia), and nine grandchildren, Matthew, Madeleine, Kelly, Scott, Spencer, Shannon, Caitlin, Charlize and Emily and 3 great grandchildren.Charlie graduated in engineering from McGill University in 1952 before joining Imperial Oil, where he took on increasing responsibility in the forty years he worked there, ending his career as Vice President of Marketing. In 1986 he retired from Imperial Oil, and joined Pat Delbridge in her company providing issues and stakeholder management consulting. In this partnership the two traveled together helping large industrial clients in Canada, the USA, and countries throughout Europe and the Far East. He married Pat in 1990, and became a much-loved stepfather to Elizabeth (Sam), Clare (Jean Pierre) and Janet (Peter predeceased), their eight grandchildren Brittany, Janine, Paul, Tim, Tanya, Robin, Pierre and Chole and 3 great grandchildren.Charlie was best known for his love of golf, playing at St George's Golf and Country Club in Toronto for more than 50 years, and for his intelligence and humour. Irma van Rutten (née Garbelotto), aged 89, passed away peacefully at home in Ottawa on June 4, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.Born on January 16, 1935, in Port Said, Egypt, to Italian parents Corrado Garbelotto and Pietrina Sorich and the youngest of four sisters, Irma's early life was impacted by the Second World War and the sudden passing of her father when she was 15 years old. In 1957, she and her mother reluctantly left Egypt, and after spending two years in Europe, they arrived in Canada on May 29, 1959.Irma established herself in Canada and began working at the Italian Embassy while pursuing academic studies in the evening. It was during this time that she met her beloved husband, Pierre van Rutten (1920-2007). They married on August 29, 1970, in Ottawa. Irma obtained her master's degree in Comparative Literature in the 1970s while balancing full-time work and raising two young children.In recognition of her dedicated service to the Italian Republic, Irma was honored with the title of Ufficiale (Officer) in 1997, the year she retired from her role at the Embassy.Throughout her retirement, Irma embraced her creative passions and spent her days reading, gardening, baking, and arranging Ikebana. She traveled with her family and friend and cherished her time with her beloved grandchildren. She was a profoundly joyful, curious, and creative person, always eager to learn about different cultures, languages, and history. She enjoyed creating beautiful and tasteful things with care and grace. Irma is survived by her sisters, Nina and Tilde, her daughters, Beatrice and Emmanuelle, her son-in-law Mohammed, and her grandchildren Sopheya, Yasseen, and Thomas. Passed away with peace and grace with both of her sons by her side at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus in her 80th year. Loving mother of Alaeric (Tara) of Burlington, ON and Fraser (Jessica) of Ottawa, ON. Adored "Nan/Gran" to Lauren, Ashley, Michael, Cara and Hunter. She cherished and loved them with everything she had. Dear daughter of the late Margaret Arena Milling and Kenneth Milling. Born in her beloved Montreal, Helen made the first of her lifelong friends as she grew up in a city rich with different cultures and traditions as she truly embraced everyone with a smile and open arms. In a natural progression, she graduated from McGill University's School of Nursing in 1972 in what was to be the start of a benevolent life in health care and caring for those in need and without means. She quickly rose to the position of Head Nurse at her prized Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She had an innate ability to care for and advocate for her patients and colleagues alike. Her career then took her to New York City at Mt. Sinai Teaching Hospital where she continued her nursing career in Cardiology, before settling into Peterborough, ON to raise her cherished boys. While providing the utmost love and guidance to her growing family, she naturally earned the love of her community and the respect of her peers. She opened her doors and heart to so many of Alaeric and Fraser's friends where her love naturally extended to them and their families. Her compassionate career led her into managing health care organizations in Peterborough including the Victorian Order of Nurses, The Alzheimer's Society, Peterborough Aids Resource Network and Fourcast Addiction Counseling Services. She gave so much to so many and treated every individual that she came across with the utmost humanity. She carried herself with grace in every aspect of her life. She was lucky to collect so many lifelong and cherished friends from her time in Montreal, New York, Peterborough and Ottawa. They were her rock and she loved them deeply. Absent from the body, present with the Lord, Willem Van Hofwegen (Wim) entered his eternal home on May 30, 2024. He was a dear husband of over 61 years to Catherine (Cathy), née Ferguson.Wim touched the lives of many with his commitment to support and encourage those of similar faith, often traveling with his family to places in Canada, the USA, and abroad. His belief that Jesus Christ came, died on a cross, rose again, and asked us to repent of our sins and receive Him by faith as Lord and Saviour—and that if we do, we have forgiveness of all our sins forever—was a driving force in his life. Although he faced challenges during the last 25 years of his life with back pain and the last couple of years with a heart condition, his steadfastness shone through.Born in Rijswijk, Netherlands, on December 30, 1937, he survived wartime, even being run over by a milk truck that took several men to lift off him. He was the beneficiary of two lotteries run in his hometown, where young children were sent to Grindelwald, Switzerland, to be nourished back to health after those challenging times. A family tradition in Ottawa on Sunday nights involved turning out the lights and lighting one candle as he shared stories of that time with his children. Scavenging for food, eating sugar beets for all his meals, even trying to eat tulip bulbs, and helping his sisters push the stove back in front of a hiding place up in the chimney for his father, all contributed to his resilience.In 1958, speaking only Dutch, he set out for Canada with a small amount of money in his pocket. Finding work and learning the language, his commitment led him to find a community of those of similar faith in Toronto. Meeting his wife, Cathy, they started a family. Moving to Ottawa in 1971 for improved job prospects, he worked for the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton and then the City of Ottawa following amalgamation, in a self-taught engineering position, where his proficient organizational skills were valued. An avid reader of many books and articles, especially dear was the Bible and faith-based material. He always looked forward with great enthusiasm to regular family gatherings, where singing together was a highlight.Predeceased by his parents, Willem Van Hofwegen and Adriana Van Hofwegen, née Krijtenburg; his sisters and their spouses, Johanna and Henk Engelberts, Annie and David van Heusden; his brother, Herbert Van Hofwegen (Carry Van Hofwegen); and his grandsons, Benjamin House and Evan Poole. Eva passed away peacefully at home at the age of 101. She is survived by her three children Eva Hawkins, Judith Sitkery-Sziranyi, (Edgar DeSitkery dec.) and Tibor Sziranyi (Norine Smith), two granddaughters Katie Hawkins (Archie Campbell) and Andrea Hawkins (Mark Charbonneau), and 4 great-grandsons (Iain and Ben Campbell, Richard and Patrick Charbonneau). It's with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Nancy Katherine Maxwell (November 23, 1940 – May 25, 2024).The only daughter of the late A.E. Norman and the late Molly Norman, Nancy met her future husband, Ross Maxwell, in 1955 while attending Nepean High School. Thanks to a stick of Juicy Fruit gum, they became inseparable for the next 69 years, which included 63 years of marriage.Devoted mother to Katherine (Rob) and Kristen (Bruce), "Gran" to her 5 grandchildren, Adam (Andrew), Robynn (Shane), Victoria (Joel), Alexandra (Nick), and Thomas. She was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Remi and Kayleigh. Nancy was also the former mother-in-law to the late David Thompson.Nancy was many things. Warm-hearted, dedicated and loving to her family and pets, a fashion icon (especially when it came to things that sparkle), and an incredibly talented visual artist in both watercolour and acrylics. Her biggest fan was and will always be her husband Ross, who believed she had a gift that should be shared. She did this through many local art groups like Art Lending of Ottawa, the Kanata Civic Art Gallery and the Ottawa Watercolour Society.To say that she was loved and will be missed is an understatement, but we're thankful to have so many wonderful memories to hold on to and keep her close. She was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren. Kaye was born to Henry and Kathleen (nee O'Brien) in St. George NB. She grew up with six sisters and one brother. Her life as a military spouse found her moving frequently, across Canada and to Europe. Kaye loved her time with her family, especially at the Lake. Kaye and Vic were long-time parishioners at St. Maurice Church where she was also a member of the Catholic Women's League. Cousin to Peter Forsyth (Barbara Brackett), Sarah, Rebecca, Margaret and Catherine (deceased). Born in Newfoundland and proud of his heritage. A man of great kindness and empathy who valued his family and many friends. He volunteered to help the more vulnerable in society through causes like the Parkdale Food Bank and the Shepherds of Good Hope. Rescued and provided a loving home to Lady, Wellington, Minx and Ned.Lover of the outdoors, camping, canoeing and, especially, the sea. An avid and skilled sailor who taught at the R.A. sailing school and then sailed his own boats as one of the early members of the Nepean Sailing Club. Sailed in the Caribbean, including St. Lucia. His downhill skiing style was a model to others, once described as "poetry in motion."A gifted woodworker and teacher of carpentry. Shared his passion with his son, helping him build a jewelry box, a boot bench and picture frames. Opened his own carpentry business, building clocks, shelves and bookcases. He also shared his interest in photography with his son, and kept pursuing new hobbies, teaching himself to play piano in his 50s.A loving and engaged father, taking his son to every Santa Claus Parade, museums and trips to Newfoundland, Saskatchewan and Paris. Spent years as Beavers and Cub Scouts leader, baseball umpire and assistant hockey coach. Public servant for more than 35 years. Worked at Natural Resources in the surveys and mapping section for his entire work life, first in camera section, then in the newly created computerized mapping area. Mary was born 1925 in the village of Pavlivka of Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine to Pavlo Andrievich and Maria (née Shavbush). Maria was one of ten known siblings, most of whom were separated from their parents and did not survive the Soviet-imposed Holodomor famine of 1932-33. She was predeceased by her husband Michael (2009) and son Taras (2016). Mary will be sadly missed by her son Roman (Marijka), daughter Stephanie (Morris), and three grandchildren: Nicholas (Jennifer), Andrei (Krissy) and Gregory (Christina). She was great-grandmother to her beloved Ethan, Julian, Adria, Khye, Aviana, Jacob, Walter and Lydia. Antony Lewis Heard died suddenly in Ottawa on April 30, 2024, from complications relating to complex medical issues. He was 59.Antony was born in Montreal, Canada on June 16 1964, the son of South African journalist Raymond Heard and mother Susan Steyn (née Lewis), a teacher. Later that year, the family moved to Reston, Virginia. Here, Antony, and his older sister, Josie, enjoyed a happy, stimulating and carefree childhood, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains with their beagle Twana, swimming in Lake Anne, making forts in the woods with their friends and tobogganing and skating in winter. It was during this period that Antony developed a lifelong love of surfing, when his family spent weekends and holidays at the ocean in North Carolina, Virginia, Barbados and South Africa.In 1973, the family moved to London, England, and Antony attended school in Sevenoaks, where he enjoyed cross country running, tennis, cricket, and being with his friends. When his father moved back to Canada, Antony stayed in England with his mother, her husband Johan Steyn, and Josie. Antony and Josie often visited their father, enjoying holidays in the wild spaces of nearby Vermont, skiing at Jay Peak, swimming in rivers and playing tennis all summer long.At age 20, Antony suffered a serious breakdown and was hospitalised. After a period of recuperation, Antony moved to Ottawa, bringing him closer to his father, who was working there and in Toronto. In the years that followed, he overcame the challenges of his breakdown, with great determination and resilience, support from the Assertive Community Treatment Team, and outstanding professional medical care in Ottawa.During this time, Antony was a guest on the CKCU radio program, Sound Mind. It was there he first met his love, Melina Connidis.Sharing their lives for over 25 years, they were a joyful source of strength for each other. Together, they visited England many times, enjoying family, including their dogs, Cassie, Tess and Betsy. Cornwall was the highlight of those visits, where Antony was a regular, surfing the waves of Harlyn and Constantine Bay. Antony was happily welcomed into the Connidis family fold, and he and Melina spent holidays at the Connidis cottage in Ontario and a sister's cottage in Nova Scotia. The key for Antony was always water and the chance to swim.Antony lived an active life, cycling, playing tennis, and swimming, until Rheumatoid Arthritis slowed him down. The downtown YMCA was his second home, where he volunteered and loved to swim. He was also an avid sports fan, following his favourite NHL hockey teams, professional tennis, UK Soccer (he was a big Liverpool fan), and NFL football. He had a great interest in the history of World War II, and spent many hours reading books on the subject.His death on April 30, 2024 leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of all those who loved him. Antony showed such courage and tenacity in overcoming the mental and physical challenges he faced. He will be remembered as the kindest, most gentle person. We will miss him dearly.Antony will always be in the hearts of Melina, his mother Susan Steyn, father Ray Heard (Gillian), loving sister Josie, her husband Hugo Robson and their children Katharine, Helena and Thomas, the Steyn family, Martin (Alison), Deon (Kasia), Linda (Rob) and Karen (Alex), Melina's mother, brothers, sisters, brothers-and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces. Peter died peacefully surrounded by loved ones after suffering a serious fall while enjoying the Great Glebe Garage Sale and a beautiful day out in his community.Peter was married for over 50 years to his late dear wife Rose Mae (Kant). He was deeply loved by his children Andrew (Carolyn Seabrook), Colin (Christina), Heather (Nigel Sanders) and Christine (Pierre Lapointe); his grandchildren, Bronwyn, Chloë, Aidan, Alya, Benjamin, Thomas, Johan and Riley; sister Elizabeth Hayes, brother-in-law Donald Routley (Patricia Heywood-Jones) and extended family. She is survived by her children Christopher Candow (Shelley Messerschmidt) and Sandra Candow (Chris Berkers), granddaughters Martina and Daria Berkers, and the children and grandchildren of Bob Armstrong.Kira arrived in pre-confederation Newfoundland 1948 with her family as refugees from Latvia via Displaced Persons camps in Germany. She attended Memorial University pre-med and then was accepted into Dalhousie Faculty of Dentistry, graduating in 1955. She commenced her dental practice in Corner Brook, NL with her sister Junija. She was the first female Canadian educated dentist in NL. Her practice took her to Labrador City and then Ottawa in 1971, where she practiced until her retirement in 2000.Kira was kind, generous and always optimistic. She believed in people, was always willing to help others and treasured her family & friends. Her love for skiing led her to build a cottage at Mont Ste Marie, where she spent many happy winters, entertaining at her beloved ski chalet. Kira was very dedicated to the Latvian community in Ottawa and Peace Latvian Lutheran Church.Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry 315 McLeod Street, on Friday, June 7th after 1:00pm. Claudette was born in Montreal into a loving and close family of four siblings, Thérèse, Jean-Pierre, and Denis, all of whom predeceased her following their own battles with cancer. Nicholas John Nimchuk, CD1, passed peacefully and surrounded by all of his immediate family, on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at LHSC - University Hospital, London, Ontario, of complications from pneumonia after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on December 21, 1942, he enlisted at the age of 17 in Halifax and served in the RCAF for 25 years. He was most known as the retired owner of J&J Gas Bar in Shawville, Quebec and beloved school bus driver in Pontiac County. As a business owner, he worked closely with Pontiac High School to provide work opportunities for their trades program and believed that everyone deserved a chance, and that no man was greater than any other. John was active in the Masonic Order and Shriners in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. He served as Master of Ceremonies in the Grand Lodge of Quebec, under Doug McLean. An avid outdoorsman who enjoyed winter sports, hunting, fishing and foraging, and even taught winter outdoor survival in the forces. John enjoyed enabling his wife and children's love of horses, which fulfilled his childhood dream of being a cowboy just like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. John was predeceased by his mother, Louise Zillman; father, Thomas Nimchuk; sisters, Sharon and Joyce; and brother, James. Survived by his wife, Jo Anne Hobbs; children: Bernice, Helen Anne (Willie), Nicholas Ian (Gracie), Johanna (Harry) and Michael (Helene); grandchildren: Nicholas George (Leeanne), Shawn (Ariana), Javan, Alaya, Brynleigh and Lenox; siblings: Tommy (Betty), Dorothy (Bob), Helen (Jim), Marion (Donny) and Walter (Suzanne); sister-in-law, Marilyn (Lloyd); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. After her children left the home, Hazel worked as a seamstress making skating costumes for competitive athletes. In response to Stanley's deteriorating health, Hazel stopped working outside of the home and devoted her life to taking extraordinary care of him. Hazel lived her life fully and was prepared to make difficult decisions. In her 90th year she moved into Manotick Place Retirement Home and in her 93rd year she stopped driving. Thank you to Manotick Place and Aunt Izzy for their care and to Aunt Vi for her constant support. Honey, Dad, Pop, Grampie, GrandpaWith grieving but grateful hearts we sadly announce that our beloved patriarch has * "crost the bar"! Donald Edward Foster, in his 92nd year, left his earthly home and embarked on his ultimate hike on Monday, May 20, 2024. He was born on November 27, 1932 in Athens to Clifford and Nina (Mulvena) Foster and grew up on the Foster farm on Kinch Street, attending Kinch Street School and Smiths Falls Collegiate Institute. During these years he honed his baseball skills and became the star catcher and batter of the Jasper Baseball Team. All the while, he caught the eye of and heart of his sweetheart, one Carole Hitchco*ck. Next month they would have celebrated sixty-five incredible years together. Donald and Carole were blessed with three boys, Stephen Edward, Robert James (Terri Harrison), and Andrew Donald (Magda Arango Foster), who were loved beyond measure by their dad who devoted countless hours in hockey rinks, basketball courts, baseball fields, building backyard rinks and igloos, going to carving shows and all things boy! He was so very proud of them and the fine young men they became espousing all the values he held dear! And then along came the next Foster generation – the Fabulous Five – finally there was a girl in the family, Jill Leanne Foster (Colton Fox), Stephen's daughter and the boys – Joshua Andres Foster and Braeden Antonio Foster, Andrew and Magda's boys and Samuel Donald Foster, and Maxime Robert Foster, Robert's boys. These grandchildren were the smartest, the cutest, the most perfect grandkids in the world where he challenged them to wrestle, box, rough house every chance he got as well as giving them impromptu language lessons along the way. Donald was a machinist by trade able to make any part anyone could possibly need. He was a lifelong student/learner, mastering French, Spanish and German, attending countless courses and even with private tutors to achieve proficiency. He amassed an extensive library of language books as well as history and military books, a second love. As well, he loved to travel and he and Carole travelled to Europe seven times, South America six times and their favourite place of all, San Andres fifteen times, making friends and speaking Spanish to his hearts content! Another passion was his love of hiking with friends, especially in the Adirondacks with his hiking buddy, Pierre. But most of all his claim to fame and what he so loved was his sugar bush and the making of the world's very best maple syrup, or so his family and friends thought! Donald also loved his church, his church family, debating politics with any one willing to take him on, and going to auctions with Carole – not so much! However, as co-owner of Fernie's Place, he actually did love what went on there. Donald sadly lost his brother and sister in the last eight months, George (October 2023) and Elizabeth Steacy (March 2024) for whom he mourned. He has four nephews and one niece - George and Myrna Foster's children - Albert Foster and Mary Ellen Foster Ferguson and Howard and Elizabeth Foster Steacy's children Joel, Peter and Conner Steacy. Joan passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 17, 2024, in Kanata, at the age of 96.Joan loved her family fiercely. Beloved mother to her sons David, Peter, and John; mother-in-law to Joanne (nee Kirby), Suzanne (nee Boch) and Jennifer Morin (the three Graces, as Joan referred to them); Grandma to Edward (Virginia nee Carney), William, Sarah, Katie, Fiona, John (Shantelle Oldford), Michael and Patrick; and Great Grandma to Liliana.Joan was born in Gateshead-on-Tyne, England, to John, Sergeant Major with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and Annie (nee Collins). One of eight children, Joan was raised by her father and stepmother, Ivy (nee Quenet). At the outset of World War II, at the age of 12, Joan and her younger brother Alan were evacuated under the Children's Overseas Reception Board scheme. Joan arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax and settled with her sister Kathleen 'Babe' Cole and her family in Kingston, Ontario where she attended Notre Dame High School.After the war, Joan returned to England where she graduated from Skerry's College in Newcastle, before successfully sitting the Civil Service Examination. She worked on the newly established National Health Service as Personal Assistant to the Controller of the Ministry of National Insurance (now DSS). In 1953, the year of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Joan left the job she enjoyed choosing to marry Johnny after which they emigrated to Canada.Johnny and Joan had initially decided to emigrate to South Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) where Johnny, who served as a pilot with the Royal Air Force during World War II, had learned to fly. Instead, they returned to Canada, following Joan's lifelong friend Maureen O'Byrne to Toronto. Johnny worked for Orenda engines until the ill-fated Avro Arrow project was cancelled.Johnny and Joan eventually settled in Kanata with their three boys. There were many happy times in those early days on Leaco*ck Drive. Joan knew how to throw a good party and loved spending time with close friends, the Cameron, Black, Myhill and Mawby families, amongst many others.After volunteering for a year, Joan was hired as Kanata's first librarian in 1968 when registration was 294 adults and 271 children. To quote the Kanata Standard announcement, "Joan brings enthusiasm and a proven interest to the job". An understatement, if ever there was one, as she loved it! While juggling full time work and raising three rambunctious boys, she graduated from Algonquin College with a Library Technologist Diploma. During her tenure as Chief Librarian, this small library in a room in the Beaverbrook Community Centre grew into the Kanata Public Library with two locations, the Beaverbrook Branch and Hazeldean Branch which was an early adopter of an automated circulation program and networked Interlibrary Loans.Following the tragic death of her husband Johnny, Joan married Dennis (Denny) Ware and had many happy times with him living on Tiffany Crescent and visiting his cottage on Black Donald Lake. After Denny's death, Joan moved to Stonecroft Terrace, where she developed close friendships with her wonderful neighbours.Joan lived life to the fullest. She loved her family and celebrated their accomplishments proudly. She was an avid reader, a family historian, and an incredible storyteller. Joan will be remembered for zipping around Kanata in her red convertible, family dinners at the Rideau Club, and for always saying yes to dessert. Her spirit and zest for life will be missed by all of those who had the privilege to love her.Joan lived independently in her home until she was 94 with the support of, family, friends, neighbors, Dr. Ceapchi and Wendy Cook. She is survived by her children Christopher Candow (Shelley Messerschmidt) and Sandra Candow (Chris Berkers), granddaughters Martina and Daria Berkers, children and grandchildren of Bob Armstrong. Kira arrived in pre-confederation Newfoundland 1948 with her family as refugees from Latvia via Displaced Persons camps in Germany. She attended Memorial University pre-med and then was accepted into Dalhousie Faculty of Dentistry, graduating in 1955. She commenced her dental practice in Corner Brook, NL with her sister Junija. She was the first female Canadian educated dentist in NL. Her practice took her to Labrador City and then Ottawa in 1971, where she practiced until her retirement in 2000. Kira was a kind, generous and always optimistic person. She believed in people and was always willing to help others. She found a bright side to all situations. She was a passionate believer in people, wanting the best for all. Soon after arriving in Ottawa, her love for skiing led her to build a chalet at Mont Ste Marie, where she spent many happy winters, entertaining friends and family at her beloved ski chalet. She loved to ski and was delighted to see others enjoying it as well. She was proud to watch her grand daughters take up the sport she loved. Kira was very dedicated to the Latvian community in Ottawa, Peace Latvian Lutheran Church and the Latvian seniors club. Harry Allen passed away peacefully on May 14, 2024 at the age of 93. He was the son of the late Reginald Allen and the late Helena Allen. He was husband to the late Marjorie Allen and leaves in sorrow his loving children: Reg (Debbie), Ken (Pauline), Una (Bruce), Daniel (Anna Karin) and Ruth (Steven). Cherished grandfather of Serafina (Lake), Harry, Melissa, Henrik, Nicholas, Mattias, Serena, Amelia and Isak and great grandfather of Axel and Everett. He leaves his sister, Evelyn, and is predeceased by two siblings, Frances and Jim. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His passing is a profound and immense loss for the family.Harry grew up in Tempo, Northern Ireland during the Great Depression and emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada at the age of 23 years old. In 1956, he married his Irish girlfriend and love of his life, Marjorie, in Cleveland, Ohio and they started their family together in Winnipeg. They lived in Winnipeg for many years and made their way to Ottawa in the late 60s and with 5 children in the household, there was never a dull moment!From the beginning, he was actively involved with his neighbourhood community. He started with helping to shovel and flood outdoor rinks and became involved in community and township recreation committees that helped build the Earl Armstrong Arena and the Sawmill Creek Pool in Blossom Park. He was the President for the Beacon Hill North Community Association for many years and a founding Director of the Pineview Municipal Golf Course.Harry was the Mayor of Gloucester from 1985 to 1991 and was well known for his stand on fiscal responsibility. As a Chartered Professional Accountant with broad experience in Financial Management, he was an advocate of prudent fiscal management. He felt very proud of the fact that during his term in office, Gloucester's prime commercial developments grew, higher paying local jobs were added, community services and transportation was improved, and not only did such progress occur without incurring debt but enough funds were in place to eliminate existing debt during a time of high interest rates. He left the City of Gloucester in a strong financial position. He served on the City of Gloucester Council for a total of 13 years and the Regional Municipal Council for 10 years. Under his direction, the council adopted a strategic plan for the development of Gloucester. He was successful in land exchange negotiations with the National Capital Commission that resulted in the completion of the Eastern Parkway, the Blackburn Hamlet By-Pass and the direct road into the Ottawa Airport.In 1991, he was honoured by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario by being named a Fellow of the Institute in recognition of distinguished service to his community and profession, as well as leadership in fiscal responsibility while in elected office. In 1992, he was awarded the Canada Confederation Medal of Distinction for his leadership and service to the City of Gloucester and the Region of Ottawa-Carleton. In 2012, the bridge over Green's Creek on St. Joseph Boulevard was named in his honour in recognition of his many contributions to the community.He was known for having a deep love for music. He had fond memories of playing the euphonium in Ireland and with the HMCS Chippawa Naval Reserve Band in Winnipeg.He was very interested in supporting the youth in his community. He was the founder and director of the Rothwell Youth Band (Brass and Reed). David Edward Paterson, born April 30, 1942, in Ottawa, Ontario, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2024 after a colorful and eventful life. David will be dearly missed by his wife, best friend and greatest champion, Laurie Lyon, and by his brother Ronald Paterson (late Joan). He was predeceased by his sister Shirley (late George Dunn). He will be fondly remembered by the entire Lyon family, and by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.Born and raised in Ottawa, David began his career working as a meteorologist in Canada's Far North, where he developed an appreciation for Inuit art and culture. Deciding on a career change, he moved to New York City to study photography, and began a career with photo news services. Quickly thereafter, he served in the Canadian federal government with distinction as a photographer for Health Canada. David captured moments of national and international significance. Over four decades he had the opportunity to photograph world events; many Summer and Winter Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan Am Games and celebrities including Queen Elizabeth and John Lennon. His keen eye and artistic talent helped document significant health initiatives, and public health campaigns until his retirement in 1999.David's passion for photography was matched only by his love of sports. He was an avid golfer, and for many years was a devoted member of the Kanata Lakes and later the Glen Mar (now Stittsville) Golf Clubs, where he spent countless hours perfecting his game, and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow golf enthusiasts. Additionally, David had a deep love for curling and was a long-time member of the Navy Curling Club, where he enjoyed the strategic and social aspects of the sport.In retirement, David became a gardening enthusiast, most recently, dedicating his time to beautification projects around the Ambleside 11 complex where he and Laurie have been living. His efforts brought joy and beauty to his community, reflecting his commitment to enhancing the world around him. He enjoyed nature and all animals. He got great pleasure out of feeding squirrels, and prided himself on being the only person who knew how to "speak cat".David's legacy is not only marked by his professional contributions and hobbies, but also by the relationships he built and the lives he touched. He was known for his warm personality, unwavering loyalty, and a deliciously sharp wit. David was a storyteller and lucky are the few who had the opportunity to read one of David's creative and humorous emails capturing reflections on a recent trip or current events.David will be deeply missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him. Elaine passed away suddenly at the Waterford Retirement Residence at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Laird Tucker, her parents, James Murray and Julia Murray (Mainville), her brother, Elwood Murray (Colleen) and her sister, Eleanor Taylor. She was predeceased by her one true love, Colborne (Coby) Edey Routliff in 1994 after 40 years of marriage, and by her siblings, Helen Hunter, Edith, Shirley McKillican, and brother, John, whom she had deeply missed.Ruth was dearly loved by her children, Adele (John Hemingway), Peter (Catherine Gardiner), and Jay, and was a loving grandmother of Tyler and Crystal. To Courtney (Gerard), Lisabeth (Derek) Taylor, she was known as Gramma Ruth, and to Hope, Lilly, Violet, Zaire, Willa, and Dre, as Great Gramma Ruth.Born in Maxville, ON, Ruth attended the MacKay School for the Deaf in Montreal before becoming one of the first Deaf women to work in the federal government and then in the Post Office until her retirement. Ruth loved unconditionally and was well loved by those who knew her. Before embracing his lifetime commitment to Fat Alberts/Ralphs, he enjoyed but abandoned blossoming career opportunities with RBC and IBM. Fat Alberts was cofounded by him and Nelson Davis and grew to 22 restaurants a dozen of which were bar (Ralph's) restaurants. At one point they were on the list of 100 restaurants to watch in an industry publication. One of the great loves of Ralph's life was politics – conservative politics. From the late '60s he signed on to the Progressive Conservative agendas and never wavered. Like everything he did, Ralph wore his politics on his sleeve, proudly and loudly. For decades he was the first to appear at Tory campaign offices with donations of subs and pizzas from Fat Albert's ... and complained loudly if he wasn't called for more to give. Ralph's dedication to ensuring conservative candidates' caloric intake had him even flying great quantities of subs to support Frank Miller's team at a leadership convention in Toronto. Ralph epitomized the definition of 'Red Tory', a true fiscal conservative but calling for support of those needing it. In this latter, his political actions reflected his community involvement, always generous, self-effacing and when committed never looked back. Ralph was completely dedicated to bettering his community and believed being involved politically was his starting point. His generosity, great humour and extraordinarily caring nature was his hallmark, and will be missed greatly. Ralph's was a devoted and avid supporter of local professional and amateur teams and Les Expos. Ralph was a strong believer in community service. Serving on boards, of the CCEA and NCC as well being on the Competition Bureau. He was co-founder of the snow suit fund with Joan Gullen and a staunch advocate for REACH ( provider of pro bono legal and educational services which merged with Able2). He was known for his intellect and infectious sense of humour often at his own expense and his adoration of his dogs Betan, Zarby and Shanti.
