NASA says no return date yet for astronauts and Boeing capsule at space station

  • By MARCIA DUNN - AP Aerospace Writer

Officials say two NASA astronauts will remain at the International Space Station until engineers finish working on problems plaguing their Boeing capsule. Test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were supposed to visit the orbiting lab for about a week and return in mid-June. But thruster failures and helium leaks on Boeing’s new Starliner capsule prompted NASA and Boeing to keep them up longer. Officials said they were not ready to announce a return date. This was the Boeing’s first test flight with a crew aboard. After the space shuttles retired, NASA hired SpaceX and Boeing for astronaut rides to the space station.

Paris Olympics sells a record 9.7 million tickets. But more are available

  • AP

After getting off to a rocky start last year, Olympics 2024 organizers said the Paris Games have broken the record for the most number of tickets sold or allocated in the event’s history. And yet, tickets are still available. Organizers say 9.7 million tickets were sold or allocated for this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games. For Paris, a total of 10 million tickets were put on sale for the Olympics. Despite the historic popularity of the sporting events and unprecedented scale of this year’s competitions, there will still be many empty seats left.

US figure skaters set to get team gold medals at Paris Olympics after ruling in 2022 doping case

  • By GRAHAM DUNBAR - AP Sports Writer

The United States figure skating team has been formally confirmed as gold medalists from the 2022 Beijing Olympics by a sports court ruling. That opens the way to the skaters getting their medals at a presentation ceremony at the Paris Summer Games. The Court of Arbitration for Sport says its judges dismissed Russian appeals to be reinstated as the team event gold medalist. The Olympic title was lost in January when star skater Kamila Valieva was disqualified and banned in a long-running doping case. No medals were presented in Beijing in February 2022 when the U.S. finished second and Japan third.

Newsom issues executive order for removal of homeless encampments in California

  • AP

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order for the removal of homeless encampments in his state. Newsom’s order directs state agencies on how to remove the thousands of tents and makeshift shelters across the state that line freeways, clutter shopping center parking lots and fill city parks. The order makes clear that the decision to remove the encampments remains in the hands of local authorities. Newsom's order follows a Supreme Court ruling that allowed for such action. While Newsom cannot order local authorities to act, his administration can apply pressure by withholding money for counties and cities.

Four detainees stabbed during altercation at jail in downtown St. Louis

  • St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Four detainees at a downtown St. Louis jail are injured after being stabbed during a fight — the latest of several instances of violence at the jail. A city official told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that a guard sent out a distress call about a disturbance around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday at the City Justice Center. The injured detainees were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately made available. Jail officials are investigating what caused the fight. The same jail was the site of three uprisings among detainees between late 2020 and early 2021. In 2023, detainees abducted a 70-year-old guard until a police SWAT team was able to free him.

China issues rare praise to Philippine president for his ban on Chinese online gambling operators

  • By JIM GOMEZ - Associated Press

China has issued a rare compliment to the administration of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his order banning widespread and Chinese-run online gaming operations. Marcos has accused some of them of venturing into crimes, including financial scams, human trafficking, kidnappings, torture and murder. Relations between China and the Philippines under Marcos has been strained since he allowed an expanded U.S. military presence in the country under a 2014 defense pact and hostilities between their forces started to flare last year in the disputed South China Sea. Marcos’s order on Monday in his state-of-the-nation address immediately banning all Chinese-run online gambling outfits came amid an ongoing crackdown backed by Beijing.

Indiana man competent for trial in police officer's killing

  • AP

An Indiana judge says a man accused of killing a police officer during a traffic stop can stand trial. One of the three doctors who evaluated Carl Roy Webb Boards II said he's “not just competent, he is very competent.” Boards faces the death penalty if convicted of killing Elwood police Officer Noah Shahnavaz in 2022. He's accused of shooting the officer through the windshield of his cruiser. Boards faces murder, resisting law enforcement and other charges. His lawyers had argued that he's incompetent because he blamed them for poor treatment in jail. The judge says disagreeing with defense lawyers doesn't qualify for incompetency.

Forced to emigrate, Venezuelans living abroad hope for change — and to eventually return home

  • By ASTRID SUÁREZ, NAYARA BATSCHKE, TERESA MEDRANO and GISELA SALOMON - Associated Press

The prolonged economic and political instability in Venezuela has forced millions of Venezuelans to leave over the past decade, quashing many of their dreams and leaving many wondering if they’ll ever return to what was once South America’s most prosperous country. Refugee agency UNHCR estimates more than 7.7 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2014, the largest exodus in Latin America’s recent history. Some have carved out new lives; some hope to return — someday. On Sunday, Venezuelans will vote in a presidential election that, for the first time in years, poses an electoral challenge for President Nicolás Maduro, who is seeking a third term. His top challenger is former diplomat Edmundo González.

Argentina soccer says its Olympic training base was robbed before chaotic game vs Morocco

  • By JAMES ROBSON - AP Soccer Writer

Argentina men’s soccer coach Javier Mascherano said the team’s Olympic training base was robbed before its chaotic tournament-opening loss to Morocco on Wednesday. The Argentina delegation filed a police complaint in Lyon, the prosecutor’s office of nearby Saint-Etienne said Thursday. Mascherano said a watch was among the items taken. It has been a troubled start to the Olympics for Argentina, which took gold in 2004 and 2008. It’s game in Saint-Etienne was suspended for nearly two hours after Morocco fans rushed the field and threw bottles to protest what appeared to be an equalizing goal from Cristian Medina in the 16th minute of added time.

Argentine President Milei travels to France to meet Macron after outcry over racist soccer chants

  • By ISABEL DEBRE - Associated Press

Argentine President Javier Milei has arrived in Paris, where he is expected to meet French President Emmanuel Macron after tensions escalated between their countries over the Argentine soccer team’s derogatory post-match chants about French players. A short clip captured during Argentina’s Copa America victory celebrations this month shows Argentine players chanting a song considered racist toward French players of African heritage. Censure from the soccer world snowballed into a political scandal when Vice President Victoria Villarruel defended Fernandez and the team, saying that Argentina would not tolerate criticism from a “colonialist” country. Mieli kicked off his trip to France Thursday, where he is expected to meet officials, businessmen and attend the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony.
