Viking Language 2: The Old Norse Reader
Viking Language 2: The Old Norse Reader

Viking Language 2: The Old Norse Reader immerses the learner in the legends, folklore, and myths of the Vikings. The readings are drawn from sagas, runes and eddas. They take the student into the world of Old Norse heroes, gods, and goddesses. There is a separate chapter on the ‘Creation of the World’ and another on ‘The Battle at the World’s End,’ where the gods meet their doom. Other readings and maps focus on Viking Age Iceland, Greenland, and Vínland. A series of chapters tackles eddic and skaldic verse with their ancient stories from the old Scandinavian past. Runic inscriptions and explanations of how to read runes form a major component of the book. Where there are exercises, the answers are given at the end of the chapter. Both Viking Language 1 and 2 are structured as workbooks. Students learns quickly and interactively. More information on our website: vikinglanguage.com

Sigrgarðs saga frækna: A normalised text, translation, and introduction
Haukur Þorgeirsson
A wacky tale of adventure in its first English translation. The saga has an unusually detailed description of the Old Icelandic 'knattleikr' ball-game. Other motifs of interest include a Maiden King ('meykonungr') and an egg of life ('fjöregg'). The article has a full translation, the text in the original language and a substantial introduction.
LA PROPRIETÀ NON È UN FURTO: BENI FONDIARI E POTERE SOVRANO NELLA NORVEGIA MEDIEVALE
Francesco Sangriso
The aim of this paper is investigate the concept of land tenure (óðal) and its evolution in Medieval Norway on the basis of both legal and literary texts, mainly Gulatingslova and Snorri Sturluson's Heimskringla. The analysis of this corpus shows how central land tenure was in contemporary society. Not only, in fact, does it represent a guarantee of social cohesion, but it also constitutes the necessary precondition for the achievement of a privileged status, as witnessed by the compound óðalsborinn. Nevertheless, from Snorri's work that this social organization comes into conflict with Harald Fairhair's newly established unitary monarchy. Hence the semantic shift of the word óðal, which, when referring to later kings, will be used by Snorri to indicate the " royal domain " .

A Literary and Editorial Study of Áns Saga Bogsveigis

Giulia Fabbris
This thesis is based on the Icelandic text Áns saga bogsveigis and belongs to two main domains: literature and encoding. The first section is a brief presentation of the origin and history of the Icelandic people and the development of a cultural tradition that has remarkably influenced the medieval European literature. I will then move to a literary analysis of the saga of Án with an essential exposition of the plot. The second section deals with the digital edition of this text. I will offer the description of the manuscript and of the literary tradition of the saga, to move then to my work on the manuscript. Here, the focus will be mainly on the rendition of the copious abbreviations encountered in the text with the aim to produce a paleographic transcription alongside with a reinterpreted text displaying all the abbreviations in their expanded forms, to end with a TEI compliant textual representation of the saga.

Tod im Sitzen in ausgewählten Isländersagas

Sebastian Pohland
